Today’s Second Life expedition didn't quite go according to plan.
After spending time at Edgar Walls' station and continuing our exploration of Second Life's ships, stations, Stargates, and communities, the Aurora crew discovered a surprisingly stubborn problem: the Slazer couldn't understand German.
Or, outside the Mystic Universe: Second Life has built-in support for machine translation, and I decided it would be useful to get it working for the German conversations happening around us.
That began a nearly four-hour battle with Microsoft Azure Translator.
We created a free Translator resource, generated the necessary keys, confirmed that Azure itself could successfully translate German into English—and then Second Life responded with the dreaded:
401 — Identifier not verified.
Different endpoints were tested. Regional settings were checked. Azure said the translator worked. Second Life disagreed.
Eventually, the expedition had to accept a simple truth: sometimes the Slazer can connect distant worlds more easily than it can translate a sentence.
The funny part is that translation wasn't even essential today. We were still able to visit, explore and communicate. But having live translation working would make it much easier to follow the smaller conversations happening around us during German-language events.
So the translation module remains on the repair list.
In-universe, Captain Charlie has now spent approximately four hours arguing with his Slazer while Lucy repeatedly insists that the translation service itself is operational.
Mission status: Exploration continues.
Slazer status: Mostly functional.
Translator: It's complicated.
